It could be seen as simple math. Chris and Melanie Heininge think 280 square feet is plenty of room to live, sleep and work. The Aurora couple have packed all the amenities they need to be happy in a tiny house on wheels hand built by Chris in his spare time.
In Happy Valley, more than 50,000 people will wander through BC Construction’s 5,185-square-foot contemporary house during the run of the annual NW Natural Street of Dreams tour of new custom homes (through Aug. 24; tickets $15). This custom two-story house, called Rediscover America, has been built almost entirely with materials and products from U.S. manufacturers and suppliers.
For fun, here’s a side-by-side comparison of two ways of building and living (guess which one cost more per square foot?):
•Heininges’ tiny house: 280 square feet, listed at $78,500, $280 per square foot
•Street of Dreams (SOD) BC Construction’s house: 5,185 square feet, listed at $1.325 million, $255 per square foot (includes about 20,000-square-foot lot)
•Tiny house: Living room couch folds out into a queen bed
•SOD house: Double-story with banks of expansive windows frame Mount Hood
•Tiny house: Built-in GE microwave, GE glass stove top, Frigidaire 5 cubic foot fridge, 22-inch Hitachi flat-screen TV, custom cabinets
•SOD house: Wolf range, quart countertops, glass bar (there is also a fully equipped outdoor kitchen)
•Tiny house: Every step to the loft bedroom also serves as a drawer or cabinet. An electric fireplace is embedded in the stair base
•SOD house: Passersby ascending the sleek stairs with cable railing arrive at open, interior sky bridges that have unobstructed views of the living room, kitchen and entry. Bridges lead to upstairs bedrooms and game room with pool table
•Tiny house: The loft bedroom has a high enough ceiling to stand up in and there is a queen-size bed and built-in night tables
•SOD house: The main floor master suite has vaulted ceilings and his-and-her walk-in closets. Upstairs, the home has three bedrooms including en suite baths
•Tiny house:Undermount sink, Jacuzzi tub, water-saving toilet, built-in shelving under tub, 24-inch-wide closet
•SOD house: Tiled room with a walk-in, doorless shower
